"Get to Know a President" Presented by COM-342: Radio & Podcasting (Week 1)

Every President has a story to tell.

Students in the Spring 2024 "COM-342: Radio & Podcasting" course produced a series of interviews with faculty and staff from across the Washington & Jefferson College community. Tune in to 91.7 FM or listen online at WNJR.org.

WNJR is holding a campus-wide Jingle Contest. A jingle is a short song or tune played on the air as part of a radio station’s branding.* Jingles can be a cappella or set to music, and feature a wide range of vocal and instrumentation styles. Content creators from all majors are encouraged to participate!

First Prize: $45 W&J gift card and your jingle played on-air in 2021

 

Second Prize: $30 W&J gift card and your jingle played on-air in 2021

 

Third Prize: $15 W&J gift card and your jingle played on-air in 2021

Contest Rules:

• You must be a current Washington & Jefferson College student. WNJR work-study students are ineligible to participate; all other student broadcasters are permitted to enter. 
• Your jingle should be 10-30 seconds, and must include the line: “91.7 FM WNJR Washington”
• All music and audio content must be your own original creation. You can come up with your own slogan, use references to Washington & Jefferson College, or use WNJR’s own “College Radio” tag. Be creative!
• Your submission must be ready-to-air (no “demo tapes”).

Submission Instructions:

• Your submission must be emailed to JingleContest@WNJR.org. as an MP3 file attachment or share link. Use “WNJR Jingle Contest” as the subject line. You will receive a response to confirm your submission. Please include your full name and class year in the email.
• One entry per student. Entries submitted on behalf of a group or student organization should have one person as the representative.
• All submissions must be received by 11:59PM on April 4. 
  

Other Details:

• Entries will be judged by WNJR’s work-study student staff. Winners will be announced in early April.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, WNJR’s summer work-study students are producing a series of remote interviews with students, faculty, and staff from across the Washington & Jefferson College community. New episodes will be broadcast every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:00 PM on 91.7 FM, or listen online at WNJR.org.

On October 27, 2018 “the massacre during Shabbat morning services at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pa. took 11 lives. Since that time, Rabbi Jeffrey S. Myers has been an important voice in our national discourse, promoting a simple but powerful message: we are stronger together,” (W&J Weekly, Week of September 2, 2019).

Please join us on this sorrowing anniversary for an exclusive interview with Rabbi Jeffrey S. Myers from the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill. This is the first college radio interview that Rabbi Myers has given. This interview will be aired in its entirety on 91.7 FM WNJR during the following dates/times:

New Music Alert: Billie Eillish

Happy Friday everybody! Today, pop music's weird cousin Billie Eilish released her newest album: WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? and it has already reached number one on iTunes! Billie Eilish is a 17 year old powerhouse, the music she makes with her brother is unique and expressive. Eilish has taken the world by storm since her first song 'Ocean Eyes' came out in 2016. Her new album is titled after a lyric in her sing 'Bury A Friend' which came out about a month ago.

Spring Break

Today is the last day of classes before spring break! We hope that everyone has a safe, fun, and relaxing time over the next week! Don't forget that you can still tune into WNJR and listen to some great tunes, there just might not be the same excellent shows until the students come back to campus.

NEW MIX TAPE ALERT! Kehlani While We Wait

Kehlani While We Wait 

If you are need of new music that cleanses the soul and uplifts the spirit, look no further, Kehlani has blessed us with her newly released mixtape While We Wait which is streaming on all platforms! The mixtape is made up of 9 songs ranging from love songs like "Love Language" to break up anthems like "Nunya." Kehlani has not disappointed us when it comes to creating bops and music that really allows you to slow down. If you do not know already she is pregnant with her first child, Adeya and that has not stopped her from creating this mixtape in mere months. She does accredit this work to her daughter and titles the mixtape While We Wait because the world is currently waiting on the arrival of Adeya and this music is "while we wait."

Also, if you are looking for a podcast and want to get deeper with Kehlani and poet and writer Reyna Biddy "Sunday Gems"is available on iTunes! They both talk about issues of depression, realities of life, good energy, etc. Go elevate yourself and listen to both the podcast and mixtape!  

Black History Month W&J Events

We're about halfway through February but there are still plenty of ways to celebrate Black History Month here on campus! Tonight there is R&B Yoga with the Black Student Union at 7:30PM in the dance studio in the new gym (Ross Recreation Center)! It's gonna be a great time, so relax, work out, and enjoying some throwbacks and popular R&B hits! On Saturday (Feb. 16th) at the Hub Alley hear Kai Roberts perform, he will be telling his story of dealing with his anxiety and panic disorder through interactive dialogue and hip-hop music. Be Prepared for good music, meaningful messages, and an overall good time. And while you're at the Kai Roberts performance you'll be able to spy some people from WNJR helping out with the audio! Finally, be sure to send an email to Taylor Grinage at grinagetd@jay.washjeff.edu by Sunday Feb. 17th to request an invitation to the Second Annual Black Legends Ball! The Ball will be on Saturday February 23rd at 6:30pm in the Rossin Ballroom. It will be an great night celebrating Black History Month, the keynote speaker will be Mark Weir, founder and CEO of LEADS- Leadership: Exploring and Developing Success LLC. Come dine, dance, and network! And be sure to attend the BSU bi-weekly meetings at 7:30pm in the Media Room!
